School Overview

Aberfeldie Primary School was established in 1925 and is located on 4.5 hectares. The school is situated in a well established, residential area in Essendon. Many of the residents are third or fourth generation local families. Our large grounds includes a full size football oval, soccer field, 10 netball/basketball courts, 3/4 size gymnasium and several playgrounds to cater for all ages.

While the majority of students come from the immediate Aberfeldie and Essendon area, the school is attracting an increasing number of students from further a field.

We are committed to providing a safe, secure and consistent learning environment that meets the needs of our students at all levels of their primary school life. There is an emphasis within the curriculum on improving English, specifically Writing, and Mathematics. The school is committed to providing a stimulating learning environment underpinned by Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT) and Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS), where students are encouraged to take risks in a secure non-judgmental environment, develop a sense of responsibility and ownership for their own learning and be engaged in a range of rich learning tasks that promotes that higher order thinking processes and responds to a broad range of student learning needs.

We also believe that effective communication and cooperation between staff, students, parents and the wider community is of vital importance.

Environmental - Grounds and Facilities

The school is situated on an extensive 4.5 hectare site - one of the largest playground areas for a primary school in the state. External facilities include three adventure playgrounds, an oval and soccer field, netball, basketball and bat-tennis courts. The site also has open and shaded areas for active and passive play, as well as covered eating areas with tables and chairs.

The school has a mix of older construction classroom wings and a modern classroom wing. Planned upgrade of facilities has included the construction of a gymnasium, a classroom wing and an upgrade of the main administration area, staffroom and internal toilets. Recent school-raised funds have resulted in the erection of a large covered shade area, a new adventure playground and construction of an outdoor stage area. Other current plans include redressing of the oval and the development of a sustainable water conservation plan.

Educational

The school provides a balanced, comprehensive and challenging curriculum and is well placed to make the transition to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards framework. There is a focus on developing sound skills in literacy and numeracy. The Early Years and Middle Years methodologies are followed. Other key learning areas are taught through the integrated curriculum model. Specialist programs include Physical Education, E-Learning, LOTE (Italian), Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Library and Reading Recovery.

The school has an increasing focus on learning styles and the 'Thinking Curriculum'. This will be an ongoing focus in our four year Strategic Plan. The school's involvement in the Innovations and Excellence Program within the Essendon Cluster, will assist in expanding thinking skills and the application of knowledge and values across disciplines, particularly with the introduction of the Principles of Learning and Teaching (PoLT) across the school. The sharing of cross cluster pedagogical ideas, practices and resources will also be a major focus over this Strategic Plan period.

The continued development and implementation of the 'You Can Do It' Program and other student well-being prevention programs across the school ensures that curriculum and welfare are integrally linked.

Technological

Aberfeldie is committed to preparing students for a digital society whereby students routinely and appropriately use technology as one of the tools available to them in their learning.
The school has a Learning Technologies centre and computers in each classroom.

The school strongly promotes and utilises the expertise of parents and other members of the community to support the students and enrich the curriculum in the area of Information and Communication Technology.
